MEMORANDUM FOR CORRESPONDENTS


The Department of Defense has notified Congress that the Government of Egypthas requested the purchase of 1,000 HELLFIRE II air-to-surface anti-armormissiles and related elements of logistics support. The estimated cost is $74million.

Egypt currently has HELLFIRE missiles in its operational inventory for use withAPACHE attack helicopters. These additional missiles will enhance Egyptian warreserve stocks. Egypt will have no difficulty absorbing the missiles into itsmunitions inventory.

This sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of theUnited States by helping to improve the security of a friendly country whichhas and continues to be an important force for political stability and economicprogress in the Middle East.

The sale of is equipment and support will not affect the basic military balancein the region and there will be no adverse impact on U.S defense readiness.

The prime contractor is Lockheed Martin Electronics and Missiles Company,Orlando, Fla. Implementation of this sale will not require any additional U.S.government personnel or contractor representatives to Egypt.

The Department of the Army will be responsible for all transactions related tothis sale.
