MEMORANDUM FOR CORRESPONDENTS


The Department of Defense has notified Congress that the Government of Israelhas requested the purchase of JP-8 aviation jet fuel. The estimated cost is$150 million.

The sale of JP-8 aviation fuel will enable Israel to maintain the operationalcapability of its aircraft inventory. It will also contribute to the foreignpolicy and national security of a friendly country which has been and continuesto be an important force for political stability and economic progress in theMiddle East.

The sale of the JP-8 aviation fuel will not affect the basic military balancein the region and there will be no adverse impact on U.S. defense readiness asa result of this sale.

Procurement of the aviation jet fuel will be from the same contractorsproviding aviation fuel to the U.S. armed forces. Implementation will notrequire the assignment of any additional U.S. Government personnel orcontractor representatives to Israel.

The Department of the Army will be responsible for all actions related to thissale.
