MEMORANDUM FOR CORRESPONDENTS


The Department of Defense has notified Congress that the Government of SaudiArabia has requested maintenance of repairable material in support of F-5,F-15, E./KE-3A and C-130 aircraft; F-100, F-220E, F-229, T-56 and CFM-56aircraft engines; precision measurement equipment; and A/TGM-65, AIM-7 andAIM-9 missiles already delivered to and being operated by the Saudi Arabian AirForce. The estimated cost is $100 million.

Saudi Arabia needs this maintenance support in order to ensure the combatreadiness of military equipment of U.S. origin.

This sale is consistent with the stated U.S. policy of assisting friendlynations to provide for their own defense by allowing the transfer of reasonableamounts of defense articles and services. There will be no adverse impact onU.S. defense readiness as a result of this sale.

Implementation of this sale will not require the assignment of any additionalU.S. Government personnel or contractor representatives to Saudi Arabia. Themaintenance services will be from many contractors providing similar servicesto U.S. forces.

The Department of the Air Force would be responsible for all transactionsrelated to this proposed sale.
