MEMORANDUM FOR CORRESPONDENTS


The Department of Defense has notified Congress that the Government of Koreahas requested the purchase of 45 RIM-7P SEASPARROW missiles, shippingcontainers, spare and repair parts and other related elements of programsupport. The estimated cost is $19 million.

Korea has installed NATO SEASPARROW Guided Missile Vertical Launch Systems onthree new construction KDX-1 class destroyers and will use these missiles todevelop an air defense capability for the new vessels. Korea will have nodifficulty absorbing these additional surface-to-air missiles into its armedforces..

This sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of theU.S. by helping to improve the security of a friendly country which has beenand continues to be an important force for political stability and economicprogress in the Pacific region.

The sale of this equipment and support will not affect the basic militarybalance in the region. There will be no adverse impact on U.S. defensereadiness.

The prime contractor will be Raytheon Company, Equipment Division, Wayland,Mass. Implementation will not require the assignment of any additional U.S.government or contractor representatives to Korea.

The Department of the Army will be responsible for all transactions related tothis sale.
