MEMORANDUM FOR CORRESPONDENTS


The Department of Defense has notified Congress that the Government of SaudiArabia has requested the purchase of ground support equipment Phase III ProductImprovement Program for 20 HAWK missile batteries to include modification kits,kit installation and system checkout, system software and other relatedelements of logistics support. The estimated cost is $273 million.

Saudi Arabia will benefit through participation in this modification program bymaintaining the operational capability of its HAWK missile air defenseequipment. These hardware modifications will also enhance interoperability ofthe HAWK with the PATRIOT missile system. Saudi Arabia will have no difficultyabsorbing these hardware changes in its air defense system.

This sale is consistent with the stated U.S. policy of assisting friendlynations to provide for their own defense by allowing the transfer ofreasonable amounts of defense articles and services. This sale of thisequipment and support will not affect the basic military balance in the regionand there will be no adverse impact on U.S. defense readiness.

The prime contractor will be the Raytheon Company, Andover, Mass.Implementation will require the assignment of one U.S. governmentrepresentative for up to three years commencing with missile systemmodifications. Approximately 55 contractor representatives will be requiredperiodically in-country during the modifications and system check-outprocess.

The Department of the Army will be responsible for all transactions resultingfrom this sale.
