MEMORANDUM FOR CORRESPONDENTS


The Department of Defense has notified Congress that the Government of Egypthas requested the purchase of 180 HAWK missiles. The estimated cost is $48million.

Egypt currently has HAWK surface-to-air missiles in its inventory. Theseadditional missiles will enhance Egyptian training capability as well as add toits war reserve stocks. The missiles will support Egypt's continuing effortsto modernize and enhance its air defense capabilities. Egypt will have nodifficulty absorbing these additional missiles into its armed forces.

The sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of theUnited States by helping to improve the security of a friendly country whichhas been and continues to be an important force for political stability andeconomic progress in the Middle East. The sale of this equipment will notaffect the basic balance in the region and will have no adverse impact on U.S.defense readiness.

The prime contractor is the Raytheon Company, Andover, Mass. Implementation ofthis sale will not require the assignment of any additional U.S governmentpersonnel or contractor representatives to Egypt.

The Department of the Army will be responsible for all transactions related tothis sale.
