IMMEDIATE RELEASE No. 634-95
December 01, 1995

STATEMENT BY GENERAL JOHN M. SHALIKASHVILI

CHAIRMAN OF THE JOINT CHIEFS OF STAFF

ON THE DEATH OF GENERAL MAXWELL R. THURMAN, USA (RET)

Our Nation today has lost a remarkable soldier in General Max Thurman. He wasa dedicated and tireless leader and a valued friend whose distinguishedmilitary career exemplified the Army recruiting slogan he created, "Be all youcan be."

Max Thurman loved the Army and I can think of no one who has served it and theNation better in peace and in war. He was a visionary who carved out the pathfor the Army of today and, by doing so, showed us courage, talent, intelligence, and strength of character.

He fought the good fight. He has finished the race. He has won his reward.

On behalf of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the men and women of the ArmedForces, I extend deepest sympathy to the Thurman family on their loss.
