MEMORANDUM FOR CORRESPONDENTS


U.S. Air Force/Army Joint Surveillance and Target Attack Radar System aircraft,known as Joint Stars, will deploy from the Northrop-Grumman Melbourne SystemHeadquarters, Melbourne, Fl. Thursday, Dec. 14, to Rhein Main Air Base,Germany, to begin operations over Bosnia before the end of the month. TwoBoeing E-8 Joint Stars aircraft and at least ten associated ground stationmodules from Fort Bragg, N.C. and Fort Hood, Texas, are being deployed toassist in monitoring personnel and troop movements during the transitionbetween the UNPROFOR monitoring mission and the transition to IFOR.

Approximately 150 support personnel and at least 10 ground station modules willstage from the United States to Rhein Main Air Base before deploying to forwardoperating locations in the Balkans. After a short preparation period, theJoint Stars aircraft are expected to begin operations shortly afterChristmas.

The aircraft are from the 4300 Airborne Command and Control Squadron(provisional). Approximately 90 flight and mission crew personnel and 185support personnel will deploy to Rhein Main Air Base in support of theaircraft. The aircraft are manned with a joint air force and army missioncrew. With about 110 ground station personnel at various headquarters, a totalof approximately 400 personnel will be deployed.
