WASHINGTON, March 19, 2005 – A Task Force Baghdad soldier was killed and 51 terrorist suspects were detained in March 18 security operations in Iraq, Multinational Force Iraq officials reported.
The U.S. soldier died of gunshot wounds after his patrol came under small-arms attack in northeast Baghdad. The incident is under investigation, and his name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. Meanwhile, Iraqi security forces and multinational forces continued to net gains in security operations in the north. Troops from 22nd Battalion, 6th Brigade, Iraqi Intervention Force, detained 15 suspected terrorists during a cordon-and-search operation in western Mosul. Iraqi army soldiers from 104th Battalion, 23rd Brigade, detained one suspect during a cordon-and-search operation in eastern in eastern Mosul. Troops from the Iraqi army's 102nd Battalion, 22nd Brigade, detained three people after they were attacked by terrorists southeast of Mosul, also during cordon-and-search operations. In other raids south of Mosul, U.S. soldiers from 2nd Battalion, 8th Field Artillery Regiment, detained 10 suspects, and Multinational Force soldiers detained eight more people suspected of terrorist activity. Elsewhere in northern Iraq, 22 suspected terrorists were detained by soldiers from the 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team).
