Peacekeeping, Humanitarian Assistance Offices Combined

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, July 9, 1996 – DoD peacekeeping and humanitarian and refugee affairs have been consolidated under a new agency.

Sarah B. Sewall is deputy assistant secretary of defense for peacekeeping and humanitarian assistance in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Strategy and Requirements. She previously was deputy assistant secretary for peacekeeping and peace enforcement policy.

Officials said the consolidation allows DoD to support administration policies better in dealing with international disaster and humanitarian relief activities. These activities include working with nongovernmental organizations, transferring excess defense property and transporting humanitarian relief supplies on a space-available basis.

The humanitarian demining function and anti-personnel land mine policy included in the humanitarian and refugees affairs office will remain in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Low-Intensity Conflict.
