General Shalikashvili to Depart for Australia, July 23, 1996 No. 229-P
Gen. John M. Shalikashvili, USA, chairman of the Joint Chiefs
of Staff, will depart Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland, on
Tuesday, July 23, 1996, for official visits to Australia and San
Diego, California. He will return to Washington on Friday,
August 2.
In Australia, Gen. Shalikashvili will attend the U.S.-
Australian Ministerial (AUSMIN) talks with Secretary of State
Warren Christopher, Secretary of Defense William Perry and
Commander-in-Chief, U.S. Pacific Command, Admiral Joseph W.
Prueher. The Ministerial will provide a forum for the discussion
of regional and bilateral issues important to both nations.
On Saturday, July 27, Gen. Shalikashvili will commence an
Australian counterpart visit hosted by Gen. John S. Baker, Chief
of the Defence Force. He will attend the commissioning ceremony
of HMAS COLLINS in Adelaide and tour facilities in the Alice
Springs and Darwin areas. During the visit he and Gen. Baker
will discuss topics of mutual interest and regional security.
Gen. Shalikashvili will hold a press conference in Darwin on
Monday, July 29, prior to departing Australia.
Gen. Shalikashvili will visit Navy and Marine facilities in
the San Diego area. On Wednesday, July 31, he will attend a
breakfast session with the Greater San Diego Chamber of Commerce
Military Advisory Council and hold a media availability onboard
USS ESSEX. On Thursday, August 1, he will participate in a San
Diego Union-Tribune editorial board.
