Fort Benning, Georgia, has been selected as the recipient of the Army's Chief
of Staff Community of Excellence award for 1995. This is the second
consecutive year the installation has taken top honors in the competition.
This year's award also makes Fort Benning the Army's recipient of the Defense
Department's Commander-in-Chief award for excellence. Fort Benning and the
Army Infantry Center there are commanded by Major General John W. Hendrix.
Army Communities of Excellence awards are given yearly to Army installations
for their efforts to provide services and support to soldiers, civilian
workers, retirees and family members. Recipients receive cash awards in
varying amounts, which they can use to further improve their communities.
The top National Guard winner in the competition was the state of Utah. Top
honors for the Army Reserve went to the 377th Theater Army Area Command in New
Orleans, La. The Tulsa Engineer District in Oklahoma was the winner of the
Special Category award.
Active Army installations that won other top awards in the program were Camp
Zama, Japan; Fort Shafter, Hawaii; Fort McCoy, Wis.; Redstone Arsenal, Ala.;
and Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. Other major Army Reserve awardees were the
95th Division in Oklahoma City, Okla., and the 121st Army Reserve Command in
Birmingham, Ala.
Runners-up in the Active Army competition were Fort Leavenworth, Kan.; Fort
Sill, Okla.; Fort Wainwright, Alaska; Kwajalein Atoll, Marshall Islands;
Tobyhanna Army Depot, Pa.; and Yongsan, Korea. National Guard runners-up were
Florida, Louisiana, Maryland, and North Carolina. Army Reserve runners-up were
the 75th Division in Houston, Texas; the 96th Army Reserve Command at Fort
Douglas, Utah; and the 122nd Army Reserve Command at Little Rock, Ark.
Named "Most Improved" were Fort Eustis, Va.; Hohenfels, Germany; and the
Wyoming National Guard. "Rookies of the Year" for the Guard and Reserve,
respectively, are North Dakota and the 120th Army Reserve Command in Fort
Jackson, S.C. Attached is a complete list of all winners, runners-up, and
honorable mentions.
The Army Communities of Excellence winners were selected by an 11-member team
of evaluators who specialize in such categories as morale, welfare and
recreation;
public works and housing; logistics; military and civilian personnel; and
resource management.
Awards for the Army Communities of Excellence will be presented by General
Gordon R. Sullivan, Chief of Staff of the Army, at a Pentagon ceremony on May
11, 1995.
The Defense Department's Commander-in-Chief Award, accompanied by a trophy and
a Defense Department Installation of Excellence flag, will be presented to Maj.
Gen. Hendrix on May 12, 1995, at the Pentagon.
