IMMEDIATE RELEASE No. 169-95
April 03, 1995

NEW MILITARY ADVISOR ON THE BOSNIAN FEDERATION

The Secretary of Defense and the Secretary of State have jointly appointed retired Major General John Sewall as special advisor to the Secretary of State on military issues related to Bosnian Federation affairs.

General Sewall will advise and assist the Departments of State and Defense on military issues pertaining to the Federation, including the integration of Bosniac and Bosnian Croat forces within the framework of multi-ethnic democracy in Bosnia Herzegovina and U.N. Security Council Resolution 713 (the arms embargo). General Sewall will make his first trip to the region this month to consult with civilian and military officials.

As Senior Fellow, and Vice Director, at the Institute for National Strategic Studies, National Defense University, Sewall is a specialist in European security issues and architecture, with a focus on the future relevance of NATO and future missions and structure of U.S. forces in Europe. He also analyzes peace operations and implications for U.S. forces operating under either UN-authorized or UN-directed mandates.

General Sewall's 33-year career in the U.S. Army involved troop command and staff assignments with the 82nd Airborne Division, the 9th Infantry Division in the Republic of Vietnam, and the 3rd Infantry Division (Mechanized) in Germany. High level staff assignments in strategy, plans, and policy in the Secretary of Defense's office, the Army staff, SHAPE and the Joint Staff in the Pentagon completed his career. As Vice Director, J-5, he participated in the planning for combat operations in Panama (Just Cause) and the Persian Gulf (Desert Shield/Desert Storm).
