Memorandum Number: No. 196-M

September 7, 1995

MEMORANDUM FOR CORRESPONDENTS

The Department of Defense informed the Congress today that the Government of Egypt has requested the purchase of 540 TOW II guided missile launchers, spare and repair parts, support equipment and other logistics support services. The estimated cost is $43 million.

Egypt would use the missile launchers to augment their current TOW missile launcher inventory as well as continue the modernization and upgrade of its mechanized infantry and artillery field units.

The proposed sale of this equipment and support would not affect the basic military balance in the region. Implementation of this sale would not require the assignment of any additional U.S. government or contractor personnel to Egypt.

There would be no adverse impact on U.S. defense readiness as a result of this sale. The TOW II launchers will be sold from U.S. Army stock and refurbished prior to delivery.
