Benefits
Up to six credit hours may be earned during Peace Corps service through the completion and acceptance of the MPS project paper. During Peace Corps service, students are not required to pay full tuition. They will, however, be required to pay an absentia tuition of $200 per semester.
Description
The Master of Professional Studies/Agriculture and Life Sciences program, including the International Agriculture and Rural Development (IARD) major, focuses on conservation of natural resources, sustainable farming systems, various aspects of international development such as population, nutrition, planning, policy or agriculture. The program prepares students, through a combination of academic studies and application of analytical skills, to assume a leadership position in development programs, in government and non-government organizations, or in the private sector. Students can choose from the following fields of study: Biological and Environmental Engineering, Applied Economics & Management, Animal Science, Floriculture and Ornamental Horticulture, Food Science and Technology, Natural Resources, Plant Biology, Plant Pathology, Plant Protection, Pomology, Crop & Soil Sciences, and Vegetable Crops.
The MPS/Agriculture combined with a Peace Corps tour will require satisfactory completion of 30 credit hours related to the candidate's professional interest. Twenty-four of the 30 credit hours will be earned at Cornell prior to entering the Peace Corps. After two semesters of academic work, the student will undertake his/her Peace Corps assignment. During the 27-month field experience, the student and faculty advisor will stay in contact and share new knowledge and experiences relating to the MPS project paper to be written based on the field experience. Following the Peace Corps experience, the candidate will prepare and submit a problem-solving project paper. The project paper may analyze and evaluate the execution of a particular program, the development of a plan of action for dealing with a selected problem, the development of materials or methodology for field programs or the development and execution of research appropriate to a selected problem of development.
Requirements
Although specific requirements vary by field of study, the following hold true to most all fields: (1) A baccalaureate degree granted by a university of recognized standing, or completion of studies equivalent to those required for a baccalaureate degree at Cornell; (2) Evidence of ability to perform well in graduate studies at Cornell, such as undergraduate academic record, Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores, and letters of recommendation; (3) A statement of purpose projecting clear professional objectives that could be well served by the joint MPS/Peace Corps program at Cornell. Students should send their completed applications to Ms. Kenna Morehouse, Academic Programs Coordinator, International Programs, 33 Warren Hall, Ithaca, NY 14853; email: klm3@cornell.edu
