Benefits
Program offers the following degrees: Six credits hours are earned for Peace Corps service; occasional part- or full-time scholarships are available for which MI students compete with other graduate students.
Description
The College of Natural Resources offers a Master of Science degree in Natural Resources with an emphasis in one of these areas: Forestry; Resource Management (Environmental Education/Interpretation, Land Use Planning); Wildlife Ecology; Water Resources; and Soil or Waste Resources. The program combines a minimum of one year of advanced training in these subjects prior to Peace Corps, with two subsequent years of Peace Corps service followed by a final semester on campus. Both thesis and non-thesis options can be negotiated, the former preparing more for careers in research, the latter for careers in management. A thesis will be the final requirement for the thesis option; the non-thesis option requires one or more projects such as management plans, scientific journal, seminar(s), publication(s) or other measurable evaluation, demonstrating the candidates' professional growth during their Peace Corps experience.
Requirements
Admissions requirements differ among advisors. Students receive names of potential advisors and are encouraged to contact the appropriate individual (based on the student's field of interest; i.e. forestry, wildlife, resource management, water resources, or soil and waste resources) by submitting an official transcript of academic records, a resume, official GRE records, and an expression of interest in thesis or non-thesis option. Potential advisors include: Dr. Holly Petrillo, Assistant Professor of Forestry; Dr. Tim Ginnett, Professor of Wildlife; Dr. Joe Passineau, Professor of Resource Management/Environmental Education; Dr. Ron Crunkilton, Professor of Water Resources; and Dr. Steven Levine, Associate Professor of Soils & Waste Resources.
