Weekly Report: Influenza Summary Update
During November 7-13, 2004, influenza activity was low in the United States.
Nine specimens tested by U.S. World Health Organization (WHO) and
National Respiratory and Enteric Virus Surveillance System (NREVSS)
collaborating laboratories were positive for influenza. The proportion of
patient visits to sentinel providers for influenza-like illness (ILI) and the
proportion of deaths attributed to pneumonia and influenza were below
baseline values. One state reported widespread activity, and one state and
New York City reported regional activity. Thirty-two states, the District of
Columbia, and Puerto Rico reported sporadic influenza activity and 16 states
reported no influenza activity.

Flu Vaccine Shortage Legal Materials
The National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO)
has opened a new web page on the flu vaccine shortage. The Association is
posting a variety of legal materials related to the shortage, such as an order from
the California Department of Health Services limiting the use of influenza vaccine
to persons in high-risk categories. The NACCHO site is located at

has opened a web page on the subject which will include links to the NACCHO
documents and other legal and policy materials.

2004-05 Interim Guidance for the Use of Masks to Control
Influenza Transmission
The following interim CDC guidance was developed in response to
questions about the role of masks for controlling influenza when suboptimal
immunization of the public could increase the frequency of influenza infection.

AVIAN INFLUENZA
Recent Outbreaks in Asia
As of November 18, 2004 , there have been 44 confirmed human cases
of avian influenza A (H5N1) resulting in 32 deaths. For more information

EMERGING INFECTIOUS DISEASE
Press Release: CDC Announces $5 Million in New Awards to
Fight Emerging Infectious Diseases
On November 10 th , the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
announced $5 million in new grants to support infectious disease research in
five major areas including influenza vaccine effectiveness, antimicrobial resistance,
Clostridium difficile-associated diarrheal disease, West Nile virus infection, and
organ transplant-associated infections.
