INFLUENZA

Updated Interim Influenza Vaccination Recommendations 2004-05

Since the interim recommendations were issued, the influenza vaccine supply and demand situation has continued to evolve in the United States so that some, but not all, local areas appear to have adequate supplies to meet the demand for vaccine from those in the interim priority groups.  This has resulted in unused vaccine in some areas of the country.

If the locally available supply is sufficient to meet the local demand for vaccine from persons in priority groups identified on October 5, 2004, the interim recommendations for that area may be expanded to allow vaccination of persons in the following categories:

  • Out-of-home caregivers and household contacts of persons in high-risk groups (e.g., persons aged ≥ 65 years; persons with chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart or lung disease, or weakened immune systems because of illness or medication; and children aged < 2 years); and
  • All adults aged 50-64 years.

Questions & Answers: Vaccine Administration
Provides answers to the following questions:

  • If adult inactivated influenza vaccine is not available, can a high-risk adult or a high-risk child receive the pediatric product (thimerosal preservative-free 0.25 ml dose) as long as they are given 0.5ml?
  • A child age 3-9 years being vaccinated for the first time mistakenly receives a 0.25 mL (pediatric) dose rather than the recommended 0.5 mL dose. Should the first dose be repeated?
  • Should I repeat a dose of influenza vaccine administered by an incorrect route (such as intradermal or subcutaneous)?
  • Should I repeat a dose of influenza vaccine that is less than the recommended dose (0.25 mL for children 6-35 months; 0.5 mL for persons ≥36 months)?
