Towns in the 10-Rad Dose Area for the Hanford Releases of I-131 from 1945 through 1951

The iodine-131 dose that Hanford area residents received depended on several factors, including age at the time of the release and where they lived. The following map shows the 10-rad dose area for children who were 0–4 years of age and 5–19 years of age in 1945 and during 1946– 1951. The four tables list the towns within those exposure areas for the different age groups and periods of iodine-131 releases.

Exposure of a child to a 10-rad dose of iodine-131 may increase their risk for developing thyroid disease later in life. Although the Hanford Thyroid Disease Study, released in 2002, did not show an increased incidence of thyroid disease among people exposed to Hanford releases, many people remain concerned. To assist these concerned individuals, the Hanford Community Health Project (HCHP) is sharing this information to facilitate a dialog between people and their healthcare providers to help them make informed health-care choices.
