Thyroid Disease Management and Radiation Exposure
This session provides a thorough review of thyroid disease and its relationship to radiation exposure, particularly to releases of Iodine 131 from nuclear facilities. Experts discuss thyroid disease—including its types, symptoms, diagnoses, and treatments; the background, methods, and results of the Hanford Thyroid Disease Study; an overview of the new ATSDR Case Study in Environmental Medicine on Iodine 131; and questions and answers from the audience. Hanford: The Psychological Dimensions of Radiation Exposure
This educational video will help clinicians understand the psychological and social effects of historical exposure to radioactive iodine from the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in their patients and how exposure to environmental contamination can affect the doctor-patient relationship. The video provides information on the history of the Hanford facility, the releases of I-131, potential health effects, and how best to communicate with those patients who may have been exposed. The material is chaptered to facilitate navigation.
