The "About Derechos" web pages became a part of the NOAA, NWS, Storm Prediction Center's web site on June 24, 2004. Additional information will be added and significant changes may be made to the web pages from time to time. When that is done, a note will be placed on the "What's New" page stating what information has been added or what change has been made and showing the date when this was done.

September 25, 2008.....
A video clip of an approaching derecho, which was recorded by Paul Knightley near Shattuck, OK, has been added to the May 27-28, 2001 derecho case page.

April 12, 2006.....
Information about the derechos that have occurred in the United States during the years 2004 and 2005 has been added to the web site. This information includes maps showing the derecho paths, listings of the dates when the derechos occurred and the states that were affected, and links to the Storm Prediction Center storm report archives for each event.

March 29, 2005.....
The May 17, 1986 historical derecho event page has been added to the web site. This event is called the "Texas Boaters' Derecho" since it capsized hundreds of pleasure boats. Six people drowned and over a hundred had to be rescued. This event page also includes a scary story told by a boater that was on Lake Livingston on that tragic day.

January 19, 2005.....
The May 27-28, 2001 historical derecho event page has been updated with two gust front photographs as well as some Doppler on Wheels radar images.

January 9, 2005.....
Climatological maps showing the frequency of derecho occurrence in the United States have been added. These maps are for the"moderate and high" intensity events.

December 1, 2004.....
Information and personal stories about two derechos which caused major long-lived electrical power outages in large cities in the United States have been added. One of the example cases struck the Kansas City, Missouri metropolitan area on June 7, 1982 and the other case struck the Memphis, Tennessee metropolitan area on July 22, 2003.

November, 23, 2004.....
The personal story about Sarah Jamison's scary experience while camping in a forest in western Maine during the passage of a strong derecho has been added to the July 4-5, 1999 historic derecho case page.

September 26, 2004.....
An audio file allowing you to hear how the word "derecho" is pronounced has been added to the "Derecho Definition" section of facts page.

August 14, 2004.....
Radar images and movie loops along with explanatory text have been added to the Quebec portion of the July 4-5, 1999 Boundary Waters/Canadian derecho case page.

July 21, 2004.....
Three photographs and some additional information have been added to the July 19, 1983 historic derecho case page concerning the derecho's passage through Madison, Wisconsin. The photographs show the laminar-layered shelf cloud and associated gust front crossing Lake Mendota towards the University of Wisconsin campus as well as post-derecho waves on Lake Mendota.

July 5, 2004.....
Information has been added to the May 27-28, 2001 historic derecho case page explaining why this derecho was called the "people chaser" derecho. Also, a paragraph has been added to the same case page explaining the "haboob" gust front that developed during the initial stages of the derecho event.

June 26, 2004.....
State and Province abbreviations (in dark green) have been added to the figures associated with the "Historic Derecho Event" cases. Also the following abbreviations for the Great Lakes (in orange) have been added to those figures: Lake Superior (LS), Lake Michigan (LM), Lake Huron (LH), Georgian Bay (GB), Lake Erie (LE), and Lake Ontario (LO). In the text for the historic cases, the abbreviations have been placed after the first appearance of the state [for example, Minnesota (MN)] or province [for example, Quebec (QC)] or the lake [for example, Lake Michigan (LM)].
