Peter Heinlein - Addis Ababa

Pete Heinlein is a 40-year broadcast journalism veteran. After 15 years as a radio and TV news anchor in Texas and New Mexico, where he grew up, Pete moved to Washington to take a job as Capitol Hill correspondent for a group of southwestern U.S. TV stations.

In 1982, he joined VOA, first as a newscaster and writer in Washington, then as a correspondent in New Delhi (1989-1994) and Moscow (1995-2000). In 2000-2001 he briefly returned to Washington, where he served as an editor on the Assignments Desk.

Along the way, however, Pete met and married a diplomat, and the challenge of a two-career family has on occasion forced him to temporarily break away from VOA. From 2001 to 2003 he worked as a free-lance correspondent out of Copenhagen.

Fortunately, his wife was assigned to the United Nations in 2003, and Pete was able to rejoin the VOA staff, where he regularly covers the U.N. The family now lives in New York, where Pete spends his days at the U.N. and his weekends attending his son's soccer games and his daughter's gymnastics meets.
