Vice Admiral Albert M. Calland III, USN, Named Deputy Director of the Central Intelligence Agency

July 15, 2005

Today, the United States Senate confirmed Vice Admiral Albert M. Calland III, USN, to retain his current grade while serving as the Deputy Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (DD/CIA).

Previously at CIA, Admiral Calland served as the Associate Director of Central Intelligence for Military Support, a post he had held since March of 2004, and as Acting DD/CIA since April of 2005. He came to CIA with a long and distinguished career in Naval Special Warfare. As General Franks' Special Operations Component Commander during Operation Enduring Freedom, Admiral Calland directed more than 3,000 U.S. and Coalition Special Operations Forces.

"Bert's experiences give him a unique first hand appreciation of our particular operational mission in the field and the value of our analytic expertise," said Director of the Central Intelligence Agency Porter J. Goss.

"We can all agree that one of the real success stories after September 11th was the cooperation between CIA and DOD in taking the fight to our enemies. That relationship continues to be key in our ongoing efforts to take terrorists off the streets and to disrupt their networks. Bert has been, and will continue to be, instrumental in enhancing CIA's partnership with the military," said Goss.

Director Goss administratively created the DD/CIA because the recent Intelligence Reform statute did not provide for the position. The CIA is working with the Congressional intelligence committees to create statutorily the position of DD/CIA.

Upon arriving at CIA, Director Goss promoted long serving CIA officers who share his vision of a mission-focused, capabilities-driven, field-forward CIA to build the Agency leadership team, to such key positions as the Executive Director, Deputy Director of Intelligence, Deputy Director of Operations, Deputy Director of Science and Technology, and Deputy Director of Support.
