Charles Rupprecht, MS, VMD, PhD
Dr. Rupprecht is the Director of the World Health Organization Collaborating Center for Rabies Reference and Research at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta and the Chief of the Rabies Program, Division of Viral and Rickettsial Diseases, National Center for Zoonotic, Vectorborne, and Enteric Diseases, CDC. In addition, he serves as Adjunct Professor in the Population Biology, Ecology, & Evolution Training Program at Emory University in Atlanta. Dr. Rupprecht received a Masters of Science in Zoology from the University of Wisconsin, a Veterinariae Medicinae Doctoris degree from the University of Pennsylvania, School of Veterinary Medicine, and a PhD from the University of Wisconsin in Biological Sciences.

Avian Influenza

Avian influenza – situation in Viet Nam - WHO update - August 31
WHO has introduced an External Quality Assessment Project for national reference laboratories for the detection of subtype influenza A viruses by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing and has now amended the criteria for accepting confirmed cases of A(H5) infection. Based on the amended criteria, the Ministry of Health of Viet Nam confirms the following 5 additional cases of human infection with H5N1 avian influenza, including 4 deaths, in the country.

West Nile Virus

FDA Approves Second West Nile Virus Screening Test for Donated Blood and Organs - FDA News Release - August 28
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today announced approval of a second test for the detection of West Nile virus (WNV) in blood and organs. The cobas TaqScreen WNV test is an automated test that's able to detect the genetic material of the virus itself early in the infection. Such nucleic acid testing improves blood and organ safety, detecting whether donated blood and organs have been infected even before the donor's body has begun to produce antibodies against the virus.

Pandemic Influenza Preparedness

HHS Announces $75 Million in Supplemental Funding to States for Pandemic Flu Preparedness - HHS News Release - August 30
HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt announced that the Department is making available another $75 million to states, territories and four metropolitan areas to help strengthen their capacity to respond to a pandemic influenza outbreak.
