Seasonal Influenza

CDC Advisory Committee Recommends Nasal Spray Flu Vaccine for Children Ages Two to Five - CDC Press Release - Oct. 26
A panel of immunization experts has voted to expand the recommendation for the nasal spray influenza vaccine, FluMist (MedImmune Vaccines, Inc., Gaithersburg, Md.), to include healthy children from 2 to 5 years of age who are healthy and don′t have a history of asthma or wheezing.

Weekly Report: Influenza Summary Update - Oct. 20
During week 42 (October 14-20, 2007), a low level of influenza activity was reported in the United States. Twenty-nine (2.2%) specimens tested by U.S. World Health Organization (WHO) and National Respiratory and Enteric Virus Surveillance System (NREVSS) collaborating laboratories were positive for influenza. The proportion of deaths attributed to pneumonia and influenza was slightly above the epidemic threshold. The proportion of outpatient visits for influenza-like illness (ILI) and acute respiratory illness (ARI) was below national and region-specific baseline levels. Thirteen states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico reported sporadic influenza activity; and 37 states reported no influenza activity.

Avian Influenza

Avian Influenza - situation in Indonesia - WHO update - Oct. 25
The Ministry of Health of Indonesia has announced a new case of human infection of H5N1 avian influenza. A 5-year-old female from the Tangerang District, Banten Province developed symptoms on 14 October, was hospitalized on 20 October and died in an AI referral hospital on 22 October. The investigation found that there were poultry deaths in the case's neighborhood in the two weeks prior to her onset of symptoms. Of the 110 cases confirmed to date in Indonesia, 89 have been fatal.

Projected Supply of Pandemic Influenza Vaccine Sharply Increases - WHO News Release - Oct. 23
Recent scientific advances and increased vaccine manufacturing capacity have prompted experts to increase their projections of how many pandemic influenza vaccine courses can be made available in the coming years. Experts now anticipate that global production capacity will rise to 4.5 billion pandemic immunization courses per year in 2010.

Travelers' Health

New Malaria Cases in Kingston, Jamaica - Oct. 24
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has received a report of an additional case of Plasmodium falciparum malaria in a resident of Kingston, Jamaica. CDC is reinstating the recommendation that US travelers to Kingston, Jamaica, take malaria prophylaxis.
