HHS Convenes America's Leaders to Help Americans Prepare for Pandemic Flu - HHS News Release - May 24
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has launched the Pandemic Flu Leadership Blog, a five-week-long blog about pandemic preparedness. Participant bloggers include some of the nation’s most influential business, health care, faith-based and community leaders. This online event is part of a new campaign to help Americans prepare for a potential influenza pandemic and engage U.S. leaders in the challenge to help others prepare.

World Health Assembly Closes - WHO News Release - May 23
The World Health Assembly (WHA), the supreme decision-making body of the World Health Organization (WHO), wrapped-up its sixtieth session, reaching last-minute agreement on two key resolutions on Pandemic influenza preparedness and Public health, innovation and intellectual property. More than 2400 people from WHO's 193 Member States, nongovernmental organizations and other observers attended the meeting which took place from 14-23 May.

Situation in Indonesia - WHO Update 7 - May 24
The Ministry of Health of Indonesia has announced a new case of human infection of H5N1 avian influenza. A 5-year-old female from Wonogiri district, Central Java Province developed symptoms on 8 May, was hospitalized on 15 May and died in hospital on 17 May. Initial investigations into the source of her infection indicate exposure to dead poultry. Of the 97 cases confirmed to date in Indonesia, 77 have been fatal.

Weekly Report: Influenza Summary Update - May 24
Influenza activity in the United States peaked in mid-February and continued to decrease during week 20 (May 13 – 19, 2007). Data from the U.S. World Health Organization (WHO) and National Respiratory and Enteric Virus Surveillance System (NREVSS) collaborating laboratories indicated a decrease in the number of specimens testing positive for influenza. The percentage of visits for ILI to sentinel providers decreased during week 20 and was below the national baseline for the ninth consecutive week. New York City and 20 states reported sporadic activity; and the District of Columbia and 30 states reported no influenza activity. The percent of deaths due to pneumonia and influenza has remained below baseline levels for the entire influenza season to date.

International Health
International Health Regulations (2005)
The purpose of the International Health Regulations (IHRs) is to ensure the maximum security against the international spread of diseases with minimum interference with global trade and traffic. The U.S. Government is in the process of preparing itself to implement the IHRs, in anticipation of their entry into force this summer.
