Speaker Information:
David DeSantis began his career with the United States Army and spent 15 years in the Logistics field. He then joined the Department of Defense and provided his expertise as a computer specialist for 3 years. Mr. DeSantis then began working for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as a Systems Engineer and was later promoted to the Lead Technology Officer for the Division of Emergency Operations and the CDC Emergency Operations Center (EOC).  Mr. DeSantis later moved from the Division of Emergency Operations to the National Center for Health Marketing where he is currently the Emergency Coordinator for the Center.

Tom Reynolds is the Team Lead for CDC Plans, Training, Exercise and Information Operations for the CDC Emergency Operations Center. He is a subject matter expert on Emergency Management, Incident Command System, the National Response Plan, the National Incident Management System and Emergency Operations, having served on numerous national-level committees for the re-write and revision of these documents. Mr. Reynolds' resume includes 21 years as an Army civilian in the special weapons arena and radiological/nuclear emergency response teams and seven years with FEMA as a Response Specialist dealing with nuclear power plant community preparedness and inspection. He was also the Operations Chief for FEMA Region IV during activation for a national disaster. Mr. Reynolds currently has 3 years at CDC as the lead ERS for the Director’s Emergency Operations Center, planning, training and exercising CDC responder capability using an All-Hazards approach and Incident Command. He was also a 20-year volunteer firefighter and line officer in upstate New York.

Avian Influenza

Situation in Indonesia - WHO Update 6 - May 16
WHO can now confirm 15 additional cases, including 13 deaths of human infection with H5N1 avian influenza that occurred in Indonesia from the end of January 2007 up to the present and has updated its table of confirmed human cases accordingly.

New Online Training Course Released for State and Local Public Health Responders - May 15

A three-day training course which provides a standardized curriculum to state and local public-health responders about how to identify and control human infections and illness associated with avian influenza A (H5N1) was released on May 15th.

Seasonal Influenza

Weekly Report: Influenza Summary Update - May 18
During week 19 (May 6 – 12, 2007), influenza activity continued to decrease in the United States. Data from the U.S. World Health Organization (WHO) and National Respiratory and Enteric Virus Surveillance System (NREVSS) collaborating laboratories indicated a decrease in the number of specimens testing positive for influenza. The percentage of visits for ILI to sentinel providers remained at similar levels during week 19 compared to week 18 and was below the national baseline for the eighth consecutive week. One state reported local influenza activity; the District of Columbia, New York City, and 30 states reported sporadic influenza activity; and 19 states reported no influenza activity. The percent of deaths due to pneumonia and influenza has remained below baseline levels for the entire influenza season to date.

National Hurricane Preparedness Week, May 20–26, 2007
National Hurricane Preparedness Week is May 20–26. If you live in coastal areas at risk, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) encourages you to use this week to begin preparing yourself for the new hurricane season, which begins June 1.

Household Transmission of Vaccinia Virus from Contact with a Military Smallpox Vaccinee --- Illinois and Indiana, 2007 - MMWR Weekly - May 18
This report summarizes the epidemiologic and environmental investigations conducted by local, state, and federal public health authorities in Illinois and Indiana to determine the source of exposure and to identify and monitor other persons at risk for vaccinia virus infection. This case highlights the need for clinicians to maintain a high index of suspicion when evaluating recently vaccinated patients and their family members with vesiculopustular rash.
