Avian Influenza

Avian influenza - situation in Indonesia - WHO update - June 6
The Ministry of Health of Indonesia has announced a new case of human infection of H5N1 avian influenza. A 16-year-old female from Kendal district, Central Java province developed symptoms on 21 May, was hospitalized on 25 May and died in hospital on 29 May. Initial investigations into the source of her infection indicate exposure to dead poultry. Of the 99 cases confirmed to date in Indonesia, 79 have been fatal.

Avian influenza A/(H7N2) in the United Kingdom - WHO update - June 4
Following the confirmation on 25 May 2007 by Health Authorities of the United Kingdom, of influenza A/H7N2 virus infection in four individuals (two in Wales and two in north-west England) exposed to infected poultry at smallholding, Corwen Farm, Conwy, Wales, the National Public Health Service (NPHS) for Wales is continuing with the investigation of the incident and with the implementation of public health measures.

Avian influenza – situation in China - WHO update - June 4
The Ministry of Health in China has informed WHO of the country’s 16th death from H5N1 avian influenza. The 19-year-old male soldier serving in Fujian province died on 3 June . Of the 25 laboratory-confirmed cases in China, 16 have been fatal.

West Nile Virus

West Nile Virus Activity - United States, 2006- MMWR Weekly - June 8
During 2006, WNV transmission to humans or animals expanded into 52 counties that had not previously reported transmission and recurred in 1,350 counties where transmission had been reported in previous years. In addition, 1,491 cases of WNV neuroinvasive disease (WNND) were reported in the United States during this period, amounting to a 14% increase from 2005 and the largest number reported since 2003.

The Emerging Infectious Diseases (EID) journal provides recognition of new and re-emerging infections and understanding of factors involved in disease emergence, prevention, and elimination.
