Objectives for this call are to:
- Understand the burden of influenza disease in children and adults
- Identify recommended groups for vaccination
- Understand vaccine supply and distribution issues for 2006-07 season
- Understand how best to communicate with patients
Abigail Shefer, MD, FACP; CAPT, USPHS is currently the Associate Director for Science in the Immunization Services Division of the National Immunization Program (NIP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). She was previously (2000-2005) Chief of the Health Services Research and Evaluation Branch in NIP. She has been a medical epidemiologist in the National Immunization Program for the last 12 years. Her areas of interest and research include 1) evaluating strategies to improve and promote adult immunization; 2) improving coverage of low income children through coordination of the national WIC immunization initiative; 3) conducting systematic reviews on cost and cost-effectiveness of population based interventions to improve coverage for both routine and high risk vaccination, and 4) integrating immunization –related quality improvement activities at the practice level.

Experimental Vaccine Protects Mice Against Deadly 1918 Flu Virus - NIH News Release - October 17
Federal scientists have developed a vaccine that protects mice against the killer 1918 influenza virus. They also have created a technique for identifying antibodies that neutralize this virus, a tool that could help contain future pandemic flu strains.

Weekly Report: Influenza Summary Update - October 20
During week 41 (October 8 – October 14, 2006), a low level of influenza activity was reported in the United States. Nine (1.0%) specimens tested by U.S. World Health Organization (WHO) and National Respiratory and Enteric Virus Surveillance System (NREVSS) collaborating laboratories were positive for influenza. The proportion of patient visits to sentinel providers for influenza-like illness (ILI) and the proportion of deaths attributed to pneumonia and influenza were below baseline levels. Two states reported local influenza activity; six states reported sporadic influenza activity; 40 states, New York City, and the District of Columbia reported no influenza activity, and 2 states did not report.
