Dr. Michael Bell is the Associate Director for Infection Control in the Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Before taking his current position, he was the Chief of the Epidemiology Unit at CDC’s viral Special Pathogens Branch which focuses on control of highly infectious viruses. He began his work at CDC as an EIS officer in the Hospital Infections Program, investigating outbreaks of healthcare related illness and has written numerous national guidelines for infection control.

Children and the Flu Vaccine - November 6
CDC recommends that healthy children aged 6 months up through their 5th birthday, their close contacts (people who live with them), and out-of-home caregivers (nannies, daycare providers, etc.) should get a flu vaccine. This expands last year’s recommendation to now include vaccination for children 2 years old up to their 5th birthday this flu season.

CDC Recommends That All Children Aged 6 to 59 Months Get a Flu Shot - November 6
ACIP has updated its recommendations for the 2006-07 influenza season. The recommendation for vaccination of children now included all children 6-59 months (the previous recommendation was for children 6-23 months.) In addition, it is recommended that out-of-home caregivers and household contacts for all infants and children 6-59 months be vaccinated.

Weekly Report: Influenza Summary Update - November 9
During week 44 (October 29 – November 4, 2006), a low level of influenza activity was reported in the United States. Eighty-four (4.8%) specimens tested by U.S. World Health Organization (WHO) and National Respiratory and Enteric Virus Surveillance System (NREVSS) collaborating laboratories were positive for influenza. The proportion of patient visits to sentinel providers for influenza-like illness (ILI) and the proportion of deaths attributed to pneumonia and influenza were below baseline levels. One state reported regional influenza activity; two states reported local influenza activity; 12 states and the District of Columbia reported sporadic influenza activity; 34 states and New York City reported no influenza activity; and one state did not report.

West Nile Virus Activity --- United States, January 1--November 7, 2006 - MMWR Report
This report summarizes West Nile virus (WNV) surveillance data reported to CDC through ArboNET as of 3 a.m. Mountain Standard Time, November 7, 2006. A total of 41 states and the District of Columbia had reported 3,830 cases of human WNV illness to CDC.
