    Cruise Ship's Corrective Action Statement

Item No.: 08
Site: Potable Water-
Violation: The first test result showing 2.0 ppm free chlorine during production occurred more than 30 minutes after the start of production.
Recommendation: Ensure that 2.0 ppm is reached within 30 minutes after the start of production. Record this result in the log.

Violation: The small diameter potable water lines in the engine room were not striped blue. The potable water line in the whirlpool pump room was striped blue and yellow. The recirculation lines in this room were also striped blue and yellow.
Recommendation: Ensure that potable water piping and fittings are painted or stripped auxiliary blue, or in accordance with ISO 14726, at 5 m (15 feet) intervals on each side of partitions, decks, and bulkheads in all spaces, except where the decor would be marred by such markings.

Violation: The mineralizer backwash discharge line and the hose connections in the engine room were not on the comprehensive cross-connection control program. The hose connection in the garbage room was not on the comprehensive cross-connection control program.
Recommendation: Ensure that all of the connections to the potable water system are listed in the comprehensive cross-connection control program.

Violation: The discharge line for the mineralizer backwash had an air-break and not an air-gap at the connection to the discharge funnel.
Recommendation: Ensure that air gaps are at least twice the diameter of the delivery fixture opening and a minimum of 3 cm (1 inch).

Violation: A hose with a valve was connected to a potable water line that was fitted with a non-continuous backflow prevention device.
Recommendation: Ensure that a continuous pressure-type backflow preventer is installed when a valve is located downstream from the backflow preventer.

Violation: There was no indication on the drain cover for the whirlpool that it was anti-entrapment and there was no letter documenting testing of this cover.
Recommendation: Ensure that anti-entrapment drain covers or other drains that prevent entrapment hazards as specified in U.S. Consumer Product Safety Publication 363-009801 (dual drains/channel drains) are provided on swimming pools and whirlpool spas. Ensure that drain covers have either the plumbing/engineering approving organization stamp and flow rate affixed to the cover, or that a letter is maintained aboard the vessel certifying that the cover meets the safety requirements outlined in AMSE/ANSI A112.19.8M or an equivalent standard.

Violation: From 01/19/2008-01/31/2008 there was no indication that the free halogen residual in the whirlpool was raised to 10 ppm and circulated for 1 hour at the end of each day. Prior to these dates, when the vessel was out of the United States, the records indicated shock halogenation.
Recommendation: Ensure that a written or electronic record of whirlpool spa filter inspection, backwashing, core sample sedimentation test, and shock halogenation (concentration and contact time) is maintained and available for review during inspections.

Violation: From 01/19/2008-01/31/2008 there was no indication that the free halogen residual in the whirlpool was raised to 10 ppm and circulated for 1 hour at the end of each day. Prior to these dates, when the vessel was out of the United States, the records indicated shock halogenation.
Recommendation: Ensure that the free residual halogen is increased to at least 10.0 mg/L (ppm) in whirlpool spas and circulated for at least 1 hour at the end of each day.

Violation: A crew member was cutting carrots and handling the carrots with his bare hands.
Recommendation: Ensure that food employees do not contact exposed, ready-to-eat food with their bare hands and use suitable utensils such as deli tissue, spatulas, tongs, single-use gloves, or dispensing equipment.

Recommendation: Raw vegetables are considered a ready-to-eat food and should not be handled with bare hands.

Recommendation: Install end shields along the buffet stations where individuals line up for service.

Recommendation: Ensure that food-contact surfaces of food equipment complies with American National Standards Institute (ANSI) or other internationally accredited food-equipment sanitation standards for materials, design, and construction.

Recommendation: Ensure that decks, bulkheads, and deckheads in food preparation, warewashing, pantries, and storage areas are constructed and maintained for easy cleaning.
