Rights and Reproductions

The Library of Congress is providing access to these materials solely for educational and research purposes. The written permission of the copyright owners and/or other rights holders (such as publicity and/or privacy rights) is required for distribution, reproduction, or other use of protected items beyond that allowed by fair use or other statutory exemptions. Responsibility for making an independent legal assessment of an item and securing any necessary permissions ultimately rests with persons desiring to use the item.

The records in HABS/HAER were created for the U.S. Government and are considered to be in the public domain. However, occasionally material of a historical nature is copied for the Survey or Record and it may be necessary to receive permission from the owner of such material before it can be published. In all cases the courtesy of an acknowledgment is requested if material is used in a publication. Again, users are reminded that it is their responsibility to make an independent legal assessment of an item and to secure any necessary permissions for any further desired use or reproduction. For information on HABS and HAER documentation and collecting standards and practices which may inform such an assessment, see information about the Historic American Buildings Survey and the Historic American Engineering Record from the Cultural Resources and Stewardship and Partnership Program of the National Park Service.

While the Library of Congress is not aware of any U.S. copyright protection (see Title 17 U.S.C.) or any other restrictions in the HABS/HAER materials, there may be content protected by copyright law. Additionally, the reproduction of some materials may be restricted by privacy or other rights.

For general information about copyright and other restrictions, see our Legal Notices.

How to Order Reproductions

Note: Users may download or print images viewed online. The HABS/HAER materials were generally scanned at a high resolution; see Building the Digital Collection for further details.

Alternatively, users can order copies of various types through the Library of Congress Photoduplication Service (202-707-5640). The Photoduplication Service's HABS/HAER Collection Reproduction Services price list outlines the reproduction options for different types of documentation. The Photoduplication Service estimates that it takes three to six weeks to complete an order. Orders must include appropriate reproduction numbers or call numbers, as indicated below.

To Order Items For Which Individual Digital Images Are Displaying

  • Photographs—Please note that photographic copies of images taken in the 1930s will probably be made from copy negatives rather than from the original negatives. Some of these copy negatives were cropped and may not reflect the high quality shown in the online images, which were scanned from the original negatives.
    1. Specify whether you desire a print from the available film negative or from the scan of the original negative.
    2. Make note of the Call Number and Item Number that appear under the photograph in the multiple-image display (e.g., HAER, NY,52-BRIG,4-2).
    3. If possible, include a printout of the photograph.
  • Drawings
    1. Make note of the Survey Number (e.g., HAER NY - 143) and Sheet Number (e.g., "Sheet 1 of 4"), which appear on the edge of the drawing. (NOTE: These numbers are visible in the Tiff "Reference Image" display.)
    2. If possible, include a printout of the drawing.
  • Data Pages
    1. Make note of the Call Number in the catalog record.

To Order Items For Which Individual Digital Images Are NOT Displaying

  • Processed Materials—Processed materials have a number in the CALL NUMBER field that begins with either HABS or HAER and a state abbreviation (e.g., HABS,ILL,16-CHIG,33-).
    1. Make note of the Call Number listed at the top of this screen.
    2. Look at the MEDIUM field listed at the top of this screen. If it lists more than one item, the entire group can be ordered as photocopies or high-quality copies.
    3. All the items in a particular medium (e.g., all drawings, all photographs) can be ordered as photocopies or high-quality copies.
  • Unprocessed Materials—If the CALL NUMBER field includes the phrase "Unprocessed items," or includes an accession number (e.g., DLC/PP-95:AK-5 or [1991(HABS):10]), the materials, with few exceptions, are unavailable.
