FERC seeks $273.4 million for fiscal 2009 budget

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) today submitted its fiscal 2009 budget request to Congress. The budget request is for $273.4 million in total funding and 1,465 full-time equivalents (FTEs), an increase of 65 FTEs over fiscal 2008.

This increase in FTEs will support the Commission's reliability and enforcement efforts, as well as its continued implementation of other authorities resulting from the Energy Policy Act of 2005.

"This year's budget request reflects the growing importance of FERC's enforcement and reliability missions," Chairman Joseph T. Kelliher said. "I commend the President for recognizing the importance of these new missions, and for supporting our budget request, which would give us the resources we need to discharge these missions as well as our other economic regulatory, infrastructure, and safety missions."

FERC recovers the full cost of its operations through annual charges and filing fees assessed on the industries it regulates as authorized by the Federal Power Act (FPA) and the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1986. The Commission deposits this revenue into the U.S. Treasury as a direct offset to its appropriation, resulting in no net appropriation.
