America is the land of the second chance, and when the gates of the prison open, the path ahead should lead to a better life.
– President George W. Bush, State of the Union Address, January 20, 2004
Inmates hands through prison bars

Health, mental health and substance abuse problems often are more apparent in jails and prisons than in the community. Incarcerated men and women are often diagnosed with health, mental health, and substance abuse problems after receiving care from a correctional health provider.

Prison bars

Studies have shown that infectious diseases and traumatic brain injuries are found at higher rates among inmates than among the general public.  Substance use-related disorders and mental illnesses are among the most frequently reported disorders among men and women incarcerated in state prisons.
