Longitudinal Prospective Cohort Patient Registry (LPCPR) for TMJ

Division of Population and Health Promotion Sciences

We are seeking Concept Clearance for a Request for Proposal (RFP). The ultimate goal of this initiative is to establish and maintain a national registry to study the natural history of TMJ Disorders (TMJD). Currently in the area of TMJD there is a lack of population-based epidemiologic data and well-designed longitudinal studies. Also, the etiology of TMJD is not fully understood. Therefore, the purpose of the Part I of this RFP is to determine the feasibility of establishing a patient registry to:

  • identify determinants of muscle and TMJ pain
  • identify environmental and genetic factors that increase the risk of TMJ disorders
  • examine the role of other systemic conditions in the development of TMJDs.

The end product of Part I will be the establishment of the scope, patient eligibility criteria, study design, and protocol for setting up the LPCPR. The protocol should specify clinical information and biological samples to be collected. In addition, Part I will include the organization of an independent oversight committee to (a) guide in the development and maintenance of the future registry and repositories, (b) insure participant safety and anonymity, and (c) select, through a competitive review process, requests for use of registry information for research. The independent oversight committee will consist of scientists, patients, patient advocates, and ethicists.

Part II of this RFP would be the actual establishment of the registry.

Both Part I and II will use the contract mechanism.
