Interventional Trials In Oral Infectious Diseases

Clinical, Behavioral and Epidemiological Research Branch
Division of Population and Health Promotion Sciences

OBJECTIVE

A program announcement expressing NIDCR interest in supporting interventional trials addressing oral infectious diseases will be released. While the broad theme of this program announcement will include essentially any oral condition with an infectious cause -- bacterial, viral and fungal -- special emphasis will be placed on dental caries and periodontal diseases.

NIDCR aims to foster high quality interventional trials that address clinical problems that have a significant impact on public health and future clinical practice. The goals of this announcement are to highlight NIDCR interest in this program area and to encourage investigators to submit interventional trials, particularly early stage phase 1 and 2 studies, into the newly defined clinical trial pathway.

BACKGROUND The guidance provided by the National Advisory Dental and Craniofacial Research Council at the January 2002 meeting and earlier meetings of a subgroup addressing clinical trials research was used in selecting this clinical trial research area of emphasis. Interventional trials for oral infectious diseases are a critical component of the NIDCR mission, are unlikely to be supported by other institutes, and there are numerous ready targets for such interventional trials. This program announcement will signal the Institute's interest in this area of high program priority for interventional trials, in general, and for trials addressing oral infectious conditions, in particular.
