Dworshak National Fish Hatchery is seeking Hatchery Volunteers! The hatchery provides an exceptional opportunity to give your time and skills to help Conserve America’s Fisheries with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.

Current volunteer needs are: Hatchery Hosts (primarily Feb-May), Production Assistants (Jan-May and Aug-Sept), a Photo Library Assistant (year-round) and a Lewis & Clark Garden Caretaker (April-Sept). Hosts staff the visitor balcony during the spawning process and assist visitors by answering general hatchery and specific spawning questions. Hosts may also give guided tours to visitors and school groups. Production Assistants work with staff biologists in handling adult fish during spawning. The Photo Library Assistant works to organize and catalog the hatchery’s photo archives. The Garden Caretaker works to maintain the Lewis & Clark garden as an inviting and educational entrance to the hatchery.

Other volunteer opportunities exist for working with staff biologists in a variety of situations, assisting in office tasks, grounds keeping, and other areas. Students interested in gaining experience in fisheries are encouraged to contact the Volunteer Coordinator for information on additional volunteer opportunities related to their areas of interest.

Most volunteer work is conducted indoors on either the upper level of the main hatchery building, which is fully accessible to persons with special needs, or the lower spawning areas. Occasional work may be conducted outdoors, in any kind of weather; the Garden Caretaker works primarily outdoors.

Hatchery Volunteers are provided with orientation, training and all job-related information, setting them up for success on the job. No prior experience is necessary.

For more information or for a paper application, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator at 208-476-4591 or by email.
