Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Title VII

William L. Robinson, Professor of Law, David Clarke Law School, University of the District of Columbia. Mr. Robinson, a 1966 Columbia Law School graduate, joined the staff of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund (LDF) in 1967, becoming director of the employment discrimination practice area. Mr. Robinson played a primary role in two leading Title VII cases, Griggs v. Duke Power Co. and McDonnell Douglas Corp. v. Green, and he participated in the first Title VII case to be heard by the Supreme Court, Phillips v. Martin Marietta. Mr. Robinson also served as Associate General Counsel of the EEOC, joining the Commission shortly after it received litigation authority from Congress following enactment of the Equal Employment Opportunity Act of 1972. As Associate General Counsel, Mr. Robinson developed the EEOC's national litigation program.
