Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Title VII

Julius L. Chambers led the fight against discrimination in the workplace and in other facets of society. After opening the first integrated law firm in North Carolina, Mr. Chambers was lead counsel in two of the most important early Title VII cases, Griggs v. Duke Power Co. and Albemarle Paper Co. v. Moody. A graduate of the University of North Carolina Law School (where he was the first African-American editor of the law review and finished first in his class), Mr. Chambers's commitment to civil rights extended beyond the workplace: he led the fight to desegregate the Charlotte, NC school system, arguing and winning the seminal case of Swann v. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Bd. of Educ. In 1984, he became Director-Counsel of the NAACP LDF, returning to North Carolina in 1993 to become Chancellor of North Carolina Central University, a position held until 2001. Mr. Chambers currently works in private practice.
