The historic site of Nova Scotia offers a rare snapshot of Eastern Ozarks mining town life as it was in the late 19th century. From 1800 to 1885, this thriving "company" town provided pig iron to a nation of new industries in need of steel to rebuild after the devastation of the Civil War. The town boasted round-the-clock fires in a 100-ton furnace; at its time, the world's largest. An annual "Passport in Time" event welcomes volunteers to Salem District to aid in excavation and examination of artifacts unearthed at the site. Salem District offers one of the two areas on Forest that welcomes ATV and motorcycle riders -- Sutton Bluff ATV Area.
