DAY USE PASSES

Many of the more highly developed day use recreation areas charge a $2.00 or $3.00 per vehicle daily recreation use fee, which helps pay for personnel and supplies to clean, maintain, and operate this site. As an alternative to this daily fee, recreationists may purchase annual Mark Twain National Forest Day Use passes for $20.00, (or $10 with a Interagency Annual, Senior and Access Passes and Golden Eagle, Age, and Access Passports). These passes are available at most Mark Twain National Forest recreation areas that are operated by concessionaires and all District offices, and they are honored at all recreation areas within the Mark Twain National Forest.

MOTORCYCLE, ATV, AND MOUNTAIN BIKE PERMITS

Mark Twain National Forest restricts riding of ATVs and motorcycles on national forest land to open, numbered roads (if ridden in compliance with state law) and designated motorized trails. State law prohibits riding ATVs on public roads, unless they have a county permit, or meet certain other provisions. There are currently two designated motorized trail systems on the forest – the Chadwick Motorcycle and ATV Trail System in Christian County, and the Sutton Bluff Motorcycle and ATV Trail System in Reynolds County (near the Sutton Bluff Campground). The Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act authorizes collecting and retaining fees for specialized trail systems in order to improve maintenance on site and better serve the customers. Anyone riding an ATV, motorcycle, or mountain bike on one of these trails is required to purchase and display a current annual ATV/motorcycle or mountain bike sticker or daily use tag.

Annual stickers sell for $45 for ATVs and motorcycles, and $20 for mountain bikes in 2009; daily tags sell for $7/day for ATVs and motorcycles, and $3/day for mountain bikes. These tags are currently available at Forest Service offices in Salem, Ava, and Rolla, and through the following private businesses: Kay’s Country Store and Outdoors Inspirations in Chadwick, Oldfield Outpost and Centerville store. The extended hours that these businesses have makes it convenient for customers to purchase permits and passes near the trail systems. For information on Forest Service permits and sales click here.

SPECIAL USE PERMITS

Permits are required to use National Forests lands when there is commercial gain, or when there is an impact on Forest Resources. Information about permits for commerial filming, outfitting and guideing, etc., can be found at the National Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management Passes and Permits Website . The next point of contact should be the Local Forest Ranger District where the activity will occur.
