DESCRIPTION:
Provides an alternative, customized, free education to District students. It receives and reviews applications to develop public charter schools; awards or denies requests for charters; monitors the operations of public charter schools, as well as the progress of students in those schools; and renews charters, or withdraws and revokes charters of schools that fall short of their goals or whose students perform poorly.
