ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- To help Alaskans learn ways to protect against potential natural disaster events, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Alaska Division of Emergency Services (ADES) are opening a multi-hazard safety booth Wednesday in the University Mall at 3901 Old Seward Highway in Anchorage.
The booth will be staffed from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily through March 8, and will house a variety of mitigation information on hazards such as avalanches, spring ice breakup, flooding, ice and wind storms, severe cold, earthquakes and fires.
Individuals can meet face-to-face with a disaster prevention adviser to discuss ways to eliminate or reduce the financial losses, stress and heartaches associated with hazard events. Materials available to take home for use in family discussions about hazard awareness include disaster prevention and safety handouts and, for children, disaster awareness coloring books provided by the American Red Cross.
Plans are in progress to make the multi-hazard booth available in other areas of Southcentral Alaska.
