Operating AWIPS

PCU 1: Data Acquisition and Dissemination

Producer: to be named

Description of Job Duty Competency to be Achieved

Demonstrate a working knowledge of the data acquisition and dissemination processes used by AWIPS, and be able to recognize and correct any deficiencies in these processes.

Description of Need

AWIPS is the primary component that pulls together all data sources used in NWS operations and the initial component through which data and products are distributed to users. Failure of any data flow within AWIPS can result in a loss of critical decision making information or distribution of critical weather products. The operational user must ensure that AWIPS is able to successfully acquire all required data ansysinformation, conduct quality control for each data type, and distribute data and products as required. Any source of interruption to this data flow must be recognized and immediately corrected.

Specific Job Task Skills and Knowledge

1. Demonstrate a working knowledge of how the satellite broadcast network (SBN) functions. Know what data are received via the SBN. Be able to recognize and correct interruptions in the data flow.

2. Demonstrate a working knowledge of how the wide area network (WAN) functions. Know what data and products are received or transmitted via the WAN. Be able to recognize and correct interruptions in the data flow.

3. Demonstrate a working knowledge of how the local data acquisition and distribution (LDAD) application functions. Know what data and products are received or transmitted via LDAD. Be able to recognize and correct interruptions in the data flow.

4. Demonstrate a working knowledge of how the asynchronous communications within AWIPS functions. Know what data and products are received or transmitted via asynchronous communications. Be able to recognize and correct interruptions in the data flow.

5. Demonstrate a working knowledge of any other AWIPS acquisition and dissemination components not covered in tasks (1) through (4). Know what data and products are received or transmitted via these components. Be able to recognize and correct interruptions in the data flow.

6. Be able to describe internal AWIPS processes such as data quality control, data archiving, and data storage protocols, among others.

Instructional Components

Instructional Component 1.1: Complete a web-based module on the operation of the SBN and WAN. (To be developed) [1,2]

Instructional Component 1.2: Complete a web-based module on the general operations of LDAD and work with the local LDAD Focal Point to become familiar with the local LDAD structure. (To be developed) [3]

Instructional Component 1.3: Complete a web-based module on the operation of AWIPS asynchronous communications. (To be developed) [4]

Instructional Component 1.4: Complete a web-based module on internal AWIPS processes such as quality control, data archiving, and data storage protocols, among others. (To be developed) [6]

Proposed Evaluation

Evaluation 1.1: Each Instructional Component (IC) will include an evaluation segment that will address the main points of the module.

Evaluation 1.2: The overall impact of these ICs will be evaluated subjectively in terms of an AWIPS user's ability to maintain the operational readiness of the data acquisition and dissemination functions within AWIPS.
