This Professional Development Series (PDS) establishes a training framework for addressing basic numerical model concepts, providing a steady stream of information about model enhancements, and outlining a process for interpreting and using model guidance. Since forecast programs and model enhancements change continually, some components of the PDS will be updated regularly, long after the others have been finished. The PDS training plan is an interagency effort targeting NWS, AFWA, and NMOC forecasters.

The instructional units and their relationship to forecaster duties were originally identified by a team of SSDs, SOOs, and training center and AFWA personnel.

The PDS consists of multiple Professional Competency Units (PCUs), each of which addresses an area or job activity related to numerical weather prediction. The PCUs, in turn, consist of one or more Instructional Components (ICs), which use various instructional media to deliver training. These media may include teletraining, Web-based modules, station-led training, and residence courses.
