Description of Job Duty Competency to be Achieved

Demonstrate the ability to detect, assess, warn and forecast the impacts of significant weather in the marine environment.


Description of Need

The marine environment poses unique hazards to mariners and coastal communities. Marine customer response and recovery to hazardous weather is often more difficult than that over land. This PCU identifies several weather hazards of great concern to the marine community.


Specific Job Task Skills and Knowledge

1. Apply an understanding of ice accretion on ships and ship operations

  1. Know capabilities and limitation of various vessels to minimize ice accretion through use of de-icing equipment
  2. Know various wind/wave relationships conducive to light, moderate and severe superstructure icing

2. Apply an understanding of sea and lake ice on ships and ship operations
