PCU 7: IFPS Focal Point Duties

Description of Job Duty Competency to be Achieved

Provide the IFPS Focal Point with the knowledge and skills needed to become a site expert, system administrator, and trainer for the AWIPS IFPS application.


Description of Need

IFPS Builds are delivered with generic configurations that allow offices to begin using IFPS as soon as it is installed. Each new software build contains the capability for Forecast Offices to customize IFPS according to their unique office requirements. It is the responsibility of the IFPS Focal Point to configure, troubleshoot and maintain IFPS. In addition the IFPS Focal Point is responsible for training their staff on the IFPS components and new capabilities.


Specific Job Task Skills and Knowledge

  1. Configure IFPS according to your unique office requirements.

  2. Demonstrate a working knowledge of the functionality of each existing and new IFPS component.

  3. Diagnose problems with data ingest, component operation, product generation and the database.

  4. Describe the data flow during ingest, product generation and between hardware devices.

  5. Train the office staff on the operational use of IFPS.


Instructional Components

Instructional Component 7.1: IFPS Focal Point Distance Learning Course (IFPS01).

This course is a distance learning version of the IFPS setup and configuration parts of the eight and a half day IFPS Focal Point residence course which was held at the NWS Training Center. This course focuses on providing the IFPS Focal Point with the knowledge and skills needed to become an IFPS site expert and system administrator. The emphasis is on the configuration, setup and troubleshooting of IFPS. Although the intended audience is primarily new IFPS Focal Points, people who would like to learn more about the configuration and setup of specific parts, are encouraged to enroll in that part of the course.

Instructional Component 7.2: IFPS Delta Training.

Teletraining sessions or web based distant learning may be required when a major upgrade is implemented which affects system functionality.

The IFPS User Guide provides detailed, documentation on the functionality, technical, customization and troubleshooting capabilities of each IFPS component.

GFESuite documentation provides detailed, documentation on the configuration of GFE and the ifpServer. In addition this document contains information about the GFE directory structure and the configuration associated with new components such as ISC.
