PCU 5: Use WFO Tools To Prepare and Issue Public Hydrologic Products

Description of Job Duty Competency to be Achieved

Use WFO tools to prepare and issue forecasts, warnings, statements, outlooks, and other products based on RFC hydrologic forecast values.


Description of Need

Proficiency is necessary in executing the steps for issuing public hydrologic products. Timing can be critical in the issuance of certain products.


Specific Job Task Skills and Knowledge

1. Verify existence of required product templates and understand how they will be used in the river product formatter and the automated weather radio system (i.e., CRS).

2. Use river product formatter to prepare and issue public hydrologic products for the HSA which include local information such as flood impact.

3. Prepare and issue hydrologic forecast products for other designated HSA(s) during backup situations.

4. Understand local, regional and national policies regarding the issuance of public hydrologic products.


Instructional Components

Instructional Component 5.1: - On-Station Training: WFO Hydrologic Forecast System. On-station WHFS training provided by the service hydrologist or hydrology focal point will cover how to produce hydrologic products using RiverPro.

Instructional Component 5.2 - Residence Course: WFO Hydrologic Forecast System. A portion of this course, attended by a second person in each WFO in addition to the service hydrologist or hydrology focal point, will describe how to produce hydrologic products using RiverPro.

Instructional Component 5.3 - On-Station Training: Backup Operations. Drills will be conducted to verify staff are ready to provide hydrologic backup to designated WFOs.

Instructional Component 5.4 - Documentation: WFO Hydrologic Forecast System Operational User's Guide and Training Manual, Section 4: RiverPro Operations. This section of the User's Guide describes the operations of RiverPro.

Instructional Component 5.5 - Documentation (Under Construction): Weather Service Operations Manual, Chapter E-22: WFO Hydrologic Operations. This chapter contains policies on hydrologic products issued by WFOs.
