Olympia, Wash. -- Washington State's proactive Y2K policies paid off in a big way on July 1, 1999. Washington State government's Fiscal Year began July 1, and as the fiscal year calendar read "00," millions of dollars in payment checks to contractors, government benefit recipients, payrolls, pensions, and vendors transitioned without a hitch. Accounting, budgeting and payments were uninterrupted. The smooth transition reflects several years of systematic Year 2000 technology compliance work.

Washington established a centralized program to coordinate state agency efforts towards Y2K compliance in 1996, evaluating mission critical systems, identifying date-sensitive applications and phasing in repairs and replacement components as indicated.

"We are now receiving the dividends from these agencies' hard work," said Assistant Director of the Washington State Office of Financial Management, Sadie Rodriguez Hawkins. "There is more work to be done, but we passed a crucial milestone this month."
