SEATTLE, Wash. -- April is Disaster Preparedness Month. This year's theme in Washington State: "Prepare Because You Care," is all about energizing citizens, businesses and local governments to take an "all hazards approach" in preparing for -- and mitigating the effects of -- potential disasters. According to Glen Woodbury, director of the Washington Emergency Management Division (WEMD) of the Washington Military Department, an "all hazards approach" provides for relative self-sufficiency for 72-hours, until help can arrive.
"Our state faces a very real seismic threat, and a state-wide 'Drop, Cover and Hold' exercise is scheduled for April 22 between 9:45 and 10:00 a.m., specifically targeting earthquake preparedness," said Woodbury. "But many of the precautions that protect against the shock and disruptions caused by a major earthquake can mitigate the effects of major floods, fire, winter storms, and even Y2K."
Washington Disaster Preparedness Month observances begin with a "Prepare Because You Care" proclamation by Governor Locke advocating greater self-sufficiency in the wake of major disasters. Activities will include special "train the trainer" classes for emergency responders and public officials, multi-hazards safety programs for schools, and the state-wide "Drop, Cover and Hold Exercise."
